The utilisation of lesser known species (LKS) is a natural part of sustainable forest management.
The know and therefore more commercial species are often scare and therefore it makes sense from an availability and often price point of view to work with lesser known species. This is especially the case in tropical timbers where the percentage of lesser known species in the forest can be very high.
Tracer has for years been working with lesser known species and promoted them for uses where they are qualified alternatives to the known species.
The experiences are summarized in our
Species Matrix which gives suggestions to what purposes the species can be used for. It is not only taking technical properties into consideration but also availability, log dimensions and price.
We think the matrix can be very useful to specifiers of FSC certified wood and it is therefore now also available as a poster. If you wish to have a free copy for you wall please email info@tra-cer.com or feel free to download it
